Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam who celebrated his birthday on Saturday may have received many gifts, but nothing could have been sweeter than a letter stating his appointment as a senator.
In a report by NST in what appeared to be his belated 64th birthday gift, the former Malacca chief minister received the letter on Sunday at a surprise birthday bash organised by a non-governmental organisation, Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam, at the state Urban Transformation Centre.
Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said the state government had proposed Ali's appointment as a senator under the state's quota.
"We will be tabling a motion for the appointment of Ali to the Dewan Negara when the state legislative assembly meets on Sept 30," he said after opening a colloquium on Media and Patriotism here yesterday.
Idris said Ali could help boost entrepreneurship among the young.
"Ali is best known as (former) Malacca chief minister, having developed the state's economy through tourism and industrial development and produced many entrepreneurs, including Bumiputeras."
Ali thanked Idris for nominating him for the post and the prime minister for consenting to the appointment.
Saying the letter was one of the best gifts he had received for his birthday, he promised to do his best for the people of Malacca and the state.
Ali is expected to be appointed as Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB) chairman today, taking over from Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who was appointed PUNB chairman in April last year.
